Founded in 2016, Educational Solutions for Children, Inc. has supported the stakeholders in the education process (students, families, teachers, and schools) since its inception. Educational Solutions for Children, Inc. has supported these key stakeholders through a variety of programs targeting important initiatives such as teacher training, teacher recruitment, parent training, direct intervention with at-risk students, volunteer tutoring, compensatory education programs, enhanced attendance, and virtual resources.
Educational Solutions for Children, Inc.’s mission is to increase educational outcomes for at-risk students through parent and teacher training, educational technology, resources, and intensive intervention programs.
To radically improve educational learning and achievement in public and public charter schools in the Washington Metro area and beyond, increasing literacy and math performance and reducing historic achievement gaps.
Jay Michney
Founder and Executive Director
With 28 years of experience in the realms of language and literacy, Mr. Michney has written and implemented countless language and literacy grants for schools and other nonprofit organizations. Mr. Michney has worked on successful federal and state level grants including: two Early Reading First grants (two The Literacy Partnership; HELP Emergent Literacy Progress), two National Professional Development grants in partnership with Ohio State University (Educators and Families for English Learners; Helping English Learnings and Partners Excel with Research Based Practices and Supports), one Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant ( one Innovative Approaches to Literacy (READ-DC), one School Climate Transformation (Mobile Outreach Services Team), one Transition to Teaching grant in partnership with Ohio State University (Project mNET), one Early Literacy Grant (Implementing Evidence-Based Literacy Practices), one 21st Century grant (Innovative Afterschool Programming), and multiple OSSE SOAR Grants. Mr. Michney is trained in over 10 literacy, math, or social emotional programs and is also a certified reliable Classroom Assessment Scoring System observer. Mr. Michney has served as a subject matter expert for “Advancing Ohio’s English Learners” and an expert witness in compensatory education hearings. Mr. Michney has developed online content for Learning Management Systems for both Ohio State University and Instituto Mundo Verde, on topics ranging from the Science of Reading to TESOL, dual language practices, special education, project-based learning, and writing.
Felicia Ball
Project Director for Literacy Grants
Ms. Ball has served as a project director on a Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant, overseeing implementation of a local literacy plan for two Washington, D.C. school sites. Ms. Ball manages all aspects of ESFC grants, including fiscal tracking, reporting, interacting with key stakeholders such as parents and teachers, conducting training, and leading continuous improvement efforts. Ms. Ball has completed the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training.
Chaundra Mitchell
Literacy Coach and Science of Reading Consultant
Ms. Mitchell has degrees in both special education and literacy. Ms. Mitchell has served as a special education teacher, reading specialist, and literacy coach. Ms. Mitchell has successfully created Science of Reading modules to support teachers as they learn to understand and implement evidence-based practices aligned with the Science of Reading.
Rebecca Mason
Literacy Coach and Science of Reading Consultant
Ms. Mason has a degree in educational with a focus on policy and leadership. Rebecca has served as anything from a classroom teacher to a literacy coach and assistant principal. Rebecca has completed the Language Essentials for the Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training, and served as a literacy coach for a Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant. During her work on the Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant, Rebecca helped to develop Science of Reading aligned training as well as evidence-based practices documents covering: print awareness, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, writing, and assessment. Ms. Mason also consulted on Ohio State University’s Helping English Learnings and Partners Excel with Research Based Practices and Supports grant; developing modules on writing and project-based learning for Ohio State’s Learning Management System.
Chloe Ball
Reading Specialist
Ms. Ball has a childhood education degree and has completed the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training. Ms. Ball has served as a teacher, STEM coordinator, and reading specialist. Ms. Ball has served as a reading specialist for a Comprehensive Literacy State Development Grant and currently serves as a reading specialist on an Early Literacy Grant.
Lesleigh Graves
Reading Specialist
Ms. Graves has a education degree with a focus in reading remediation and has completed the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training. Ms. Graves has served as a classroom teacher, special educator teacher, and reading specialist. Ms. Graves has served as a reading specialist for an OSSE SOAR Academic Quality grant.
Kirsten King
Reading Specialist
Ms. King has a degree in teaching and has completed Science of Reading training through Really Great Reading. Ms. King has served as a content developer, teacher, and reading specialist. Ms. King serves as a reading specialist for an Early Literacy Grant.
